MI5 keeps the United Kingdom safe by watching for and disrupting threats to our national security. Mandarin Intelligence Analysts make a crucial contribution, working at the heart of our investigative teams.
We are looking for candidates who have an excellent understanding of the spoken and written word in Mandarin. Your specialist cultural, historical, political, ideological and economic knowledge and interest in the country’s current affairs will help our Intelligence Officers and agent running teams to progress investigations.
Part of our work involves listening to telephone calls and translating written documents intercepted under warrant. That’s where you can play your part – using your language skills and judgement to contribute to the assessment of intelligence to help investigate threats to national security, including terrorism and espionage.
You’ll produce written reports of your findings and discuss them with our investigative teams so as well as a being able to understand spoken and written Mandarin to a high standard and analyse information from a range of sources, you will also need excellent communication and team working skills.
As your experience grows you may be given your own areas of responsibility, piecing together intelligence and making informed decisions on a daily basis that will help protect national security.

To be eligible to apply, you must be a born or naturalised British citizen and one of your parents must be a British citizen or have substantial ties to the UK. Candidates must normally have been resident in the UK for nine out of the last 10 years.
