They have a vision of a just and sustainable global economy in which small producers are capable and empowered, have access to open markets and can engage in Fair Trade for the benefit of all. Their mission is to help small producers improve their livelihoods and those of their families and communities through trade.
This organization has 400 members in 70 countries. Its membership represents the Fair Trade chain from production to sale, including producer co-operatives and associations, export marketing companies, importers, retailers, Fair Trade networks and support organizations. It is governed by an elected Board of nine and maintains a small office in Culemborg, The Netherlands, to co-ordinate its activities.
Job description
The Director of Certification and Member Services (Director) will lead the ongoing development and implementation of a global Fair Trade certification system designed to help small producers from around the world gain access to domestic and global mainstream markets. The Director will also be responsible for developing processes to provide assistance to small producers to continually improve their management skills and production processes. This assistance will in all likelihood be provided in collaboration with partners around the world. In addition, this position is responsible for managing and planning the future development of all member services, including the existing Membership and Monitoring functions. Currently, there is one part time employee and three part time senior consultants that would report to the Director.
Reports to: General Manager Supervisory responsibility: Initially, one part time employee and 3 part time senior consultants
Responsibilities:
- Lead the Certification and Member Services Organization, including the existing Membership and Monitoring functions;
- Lead the implementation of the projects (QMS and SFTMS) to develop the capability to provide small producers worldwide with management and technical assistance, in a continuous improvement system, and auditing services to certify small producers with a label so that they can access mainstream markets;
- Ensure the integration of QMS and SFTMS into the CMSO;
- Take the lead in establishing and developing the partnerships around the world necessary to serve the organization's membership;
- Take the lead in representing the organization in the Fair Trade certification community;
- Maintain an effective dialogue with the organization's members so as to understand their needs and develop appropriate services;
- Extensive international travel of approximately 25% of the time.
Requirements

- Certification. A minimum of 5 years of experience working in the development of certification schemes (Fair Trade, organic, ISO, SA8000 or Social Responsibility), or in their application as lead auditor or comparable position;
- Management of people. A minimum of 5 years of management experience, managing people in an organizational unit or in the context of a project, where not all people report to her/him;
- Diplomacy. High emotional intelligence, to be perceptive of people issues, a good listener and the ability to win "hearts and minds". Well developed diplomatic and interpersonal skills in order to influence effectively;
- Influencing/Partnering. An ability to inspire, influence and collaborate with a wide range of stakeholders to seek common ground for collective action. Valuing and being able to synthesize diverse viewpoints. Significant experience in roles requiring extensive networking and relationship building;
- Strategic Ability. To develop, adapt and implement strategic plans. Strong analytical and intellectual skills. Comfort with complexity and ambiguity;
- Systems analysis. The ability to conceptualize a complex system and formulate a plan for its development and practical implementation;
- Team Building. The ability to manage and motivate a highly professional staff by bringing out the best in people. Leadership experience in a collaborative, team oriented environment. An enthusiastic, motivational style. A track record of giving and receiving feedback on behaviour and performance.
- Project management. Strong project and program management skills;
- Communications. An ability to represent the organization externally in a variety of environments. The ability to create compelling oral and written communications that are effective with a wide range of international audiences. Excellent oral and written communications in English.
- People Development. The ability to attract, motivate and develop a team capable of effective execution. Comfortable in heading a team which is diverse in skills, tenure, ethnicity and cultural background;
- An international mindset;
- Good IT skills, including MS office (Word, Access, Excel, PowerPoint) or equivalent.
- Desirable Prior Experience
- Living and working in developing countries;
- Knowledge of international development issues;
- Fluency in Spanish
