Job Description

The Role

Bloomberg's global Multimedia group which includes television, web, radio, and mobile is seeking talented analysts to join an elite cross-media "swat team," providing deep but accessible insight and analysis about the day's big stories to a sophisticated but non-specialized business audience.

The swat team's daily task will be to generate and vet ideas for news analysis stories about economic, business, and financial topics; uncover "scoops of interpretation," i.e. novel ways of drawing out meaning from data or trends; provide crisp data analyses that cut to the heart of the matter; and define the charts, tables, and other graphics needed to illustrate arguments and conclusions.

The goal will be to bring to life the significance of events, set news into broader context, and drill down beyond headline figures. In doing so, analysts will make sense of and where possible adjudicate among conflicting views, opinions, and data.

Bloomberg Multimedia analysts should:

- Make points while eschewing ideological or political points of view. Indeed, they should bring a ruthlessly objective and fact-based mindset to the task. They should cherish discovering "truth from facts" and abhor misleading or partial uses of statistics.

- Make the most of proprietary data from the Bloomberg terminal as well as from other sources, crunching numbers as needed.

- Constantly stay on top of their areas of expertise consuming general and specialist media widely and talking with contacts regularly.

- Demonstrate a knack for verbal, visual, and written communication combined with a sense for 'the story', enabling them to bring clarity to a broad business audience.

Team members will work with seasoned business journalists - including editors and producers

- who will help bring their analyses to life on air or on our website, as well as world-class graphical artists who will illustrate, animate, and program interactivity into their graphics.
Those with the relevant skills and personal interest will have opportunities to present on-air, write for publication, or create presentation-quality graphics.

Specifically, we are looking for analysts who have passion and expertise in one or more of the following topics:

ECONOMICS

- Regional economies including GDP, housing, jobs, government budgets, taxes, national politics around economic issues, etc., with a focus on specific countries and regions (US, Europe, Asia, and emerging markets)

- The global economy including trade and cross-border issues, protectionism, international regulation and institutions, commodities and currency issues in the context of the global economy, etc.

- Economic theory and practice including academic research in economics and the gap between theory and practice

BUSINESS

Sectoral expertise including knowledge of individual companies, grounded in a broad understanding of business trends; sectors include (but are not limited to) the following:

- Consumer/retail
- Healthcare
- Manufacturing and industrials
- Technology, media, and telecoms
- Transport
- Energy

- Management issues including labor issues, business strategies, organizational trends, pay practices, outsourcing and offshoring, entrepreneurship, etc.

FINANCE

- The global financial sector including major global banks, local banks, the corporate and government bond markets, the insurance industry, and the mortgage industry

- Finance more broadly addressed with a sophisticated understanding of money as the underlying logic of the modern world, combining knowledge of the financial industry, financial regulation, securitization and financial engineering, the politics of finance, and behavioral finance and economics with a strong sense of financial history

- Corporate finance including capital raising, M&A, leveraged buyouts, hedging strategies, etc.

MARKETS

- Asset-class based markets expertise including equities, bonds, commodities, and currencies

- The practice of trading including technical analysis, speculation, algorithmic trading, trading strategies, and all the "games" of the market, addressed with an insider's knowledge of how traders actually think and act

- Sophisticated investing including basic and alternative asset classes, investing strategies, fund management, tax implications and fees, etc.
