In 1872, John Kimberly and Charles Clark teamed up with two other local investors in Wisconsin, USA, to build their first mill to produce newsprint from cotton and rags. Shortly before the First World War, Kimberly-Clark invented an absorbent crepe tissue to replace cotton in surgical dressings. This led to the development of today's tissue products.
Just seven years after Kimberly-Clark was established, brothers Clarence & Irvin Scott were embarking on their first business venture - selling paper bags out of pushcarts on the streets of Philadelphia. Trading as the Scott Paper Company, the brothers' business expanded rapidly, becoming an important supplier of bathroom tissue. In 1907, Scott invented the paper towel and in 1943 entered the facial tissue business.
At the end of 1995, Kimberly-Clark and Scott merged, bringing together two world-class, highly respected companies. Headquartered in Dallas, Texas, with nearly 53,000 employees worldwide and operations in 37 countries, Kimberly-Clark posted sales of $19.1 billion in 2009.
